The game of pool today is experiencing a greatest
revival. Pool rooms have become more inviting to play in and be around
unlike the smoky pool rooms of the past.
Pool is such a fascinating game because a history from
the greatest times and people who have experienced the enjoyment of
the game from Louis XIV, Napoleon and Lincoln to name a few. It is
also a game which has long been enjoyed by hustlers, criminals and
the gentry.
No matter, people enjoy the game because it is not physically
demanding, it is sociable. The rules are simple and you do not need
a lot of equipment. In short it is a game for all people in all places
of all ages at all times.
Put simply Billiards is a game which balls are pushed
around a table with wooden sticks. Pool is much the same except a
pool table has pockets . The white ball is known as the 'cue' ball.
The other balls the cue ball hits are called the 'object' ball.
Billiards is a game where no pockets are on the table
and only three or four balls are used. The goal being to make a carom.
Which in short means to force one ball to hit at least two of the
other balls.
Snooker is a game played traditionally on a larger table
(12x6) with pockets and balls 2 1/16" in size. There are fifteen
red balls and one each of yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black
and white. The object of the game is to pocket a red and an alternate
colour in a specific order. Scoring points by snookering your opponent.
That is placing the cue ball in a position to not allow your opponent
to hit the next required ball for a shot.
It seems through evidence and speculation that the game
of billiards found it's origin in Europe in the 15th century. England
and France are both likely candidates.
We do know that the birth of billiards is related to
games such as croquet, paille maille or shovilla barde (shuffleboard).
They were played on the ground with balls and sticks. Eventually the
game was raised up and brought inside. It is also a more soothing
colour to play on. Billiards was played with stickes called 'maces'
The mase was used to shove the ball along the table.
