Selecting a Cue

How Much?
Most people have a budget to work from. They know how much they want to spend. Cues range from $20.00 to over $1000.00 for a customised hand-made cue. Most cues are made from wood. Nobody can guarantee that a more expensive cue will improve your game. Buy a cue that suits your budget and if it is looked after it you should have it for a lifetime.

Weight
Ready made cues range from 16oz - 19oz.

Length
A standard cue length is 57”. Shoulder height is best.

Shaft
Normally made of maple or ash. Ash is most popular. The player seems to feel more comfortable with an ash shaft because the grain is more visible and can help with the line of a shot.

Butt
Most cue are made with a “flat” at the butt end. Many players like to feel the flat in their grip. The thickness of the butt should relate to the size of your handgrip.

Points to consider
Get a strong case for protection of your cue
Keep cue cleaned. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Dry off immediately
Keep your tip in good shape
Do not screw joint of cue tight
Do not leave cue against the wall
Do not leave the cue anywhere in extreme temperature

Checking for Straightness
Lift the cue to your eye line and turn it slowly as you look down its length. Do not roll it on a table bed. The tip (if not level), the joint, or the flat of the butt can cause it to lift therefore may not necessarily mean it is warped.

There are a lot of points to consider when purchasing a cue. Take your time. It really comes down to personal choice and how much money you want to part with.
